Strangely, he feared, not for himself, but for Mary. He saw, in his mind, a picture of her with sad eyes and wet hair, holding by the hand a half-dead child. In sudden fright, he shouted and sprang to his feet. He wanted to open the door, to jump out of the train. But he could not.
Suddenly the bridge broke. The train jumped into the air; and Denis found himself under a heap of broken glass and wood. The walls of his carriage spun round him and upon him; and the floor rushed over his head.
"God help us!" he cried, and then whispered; "Mary!"
With increasing speed, the train then dived silently into the black water below. At the same moment as the first faint cry of his child was heard in the cowshed at Darroch. Denis was drowned in the River Tay.Nota de contenido: 2000 headwords Hatter's Castle [texto impreso] / Archibald Joseph Cronin, Autor ; Norman Wymer, Adaptador . - 1ª . - London (United Kingdom) : Longman Group Limited, 1962 . - 116 p : il. b/n ; 18 cm. - (Longman Simplified English Series) .

'Well, that's done!' Ivory said coldly. 'I'm sorry, Manson. I didn't expect that to happen. Of course, the man didn't die during the operation. I had finished before he died. So there is nothing to worry about. There'll be no need for an enquiry.'
Andrew was trembling with anger. 'Oh, stop talking!' he shouted. 'You killed him! you're not a surgeon!'
Ivory gave Andrew a bitter look. 'I advise you not to talk in that manner, Manson!'
'It's the truth! Oh, God, why did I trust you? Why-?'
'Be silent, you fool!'
Andrew was almost blind with anger. 'You know that it's the truth. You did the operation so badly that it was almost murder!'
