About three o'clock this morning, the people living in the Rue Morgue were disturbed by terrible cries which came from the fourth floor flat of Madame L'Espanaye, and her daughter, Mademoiselle Camille L'Espanaye. After breaking open the street door, which was locked, eight or ten of the neighbours entered, with two policemen. By this time the cries had stopped. As the party rushed up the stairs, two or more rough voices were heard, arguing angrily. The sounds seemed to come from the upper part of the house. As the third floor was reached, these sounds also stopped, and everything was quiet.
